The game is played in the same way as the traditional game of bowls - and to make this true to life the bowls contain a genuine bias similar to normal bowls.
New Age Bowls may have several versions of play however, in all versions, each player attempts to outscore their opponent by delivering their bowl (red or blue) nearer to the jack (yellow) or into a target area or into a raised target with holes in it.
Each side can have one, two, three or four players depending on whether the game is a singles, pair, triples or a fours (rinks) game. The direction of bowling is alternated between each end of the rink A game will consist of a number of pre-determined ends
The jack and each bowl is delivered whilst the front foot is in contact with a small ‘delivery’ mat When bowling to a jack, a player from the team that wins the toss at the start of the game or the side that wins that end thereafter bowls the jack to the other end of the rink (there are minimum and maximum distances that the jack must be bowled to).
When the jack comes to rest it is centred in the rink The first player in the team that bowls the jack also delivers the first bowl. The order of delivery of a bowl by each player on each team remains the same throughout the game.
Where the jack has been used the side with the closest bowl(s) scores one point (‘shot’) for each of their closest bowls.
Where a horseshoe target has been used each team scores one point for each of their bowls that come to rest inside the target.
Where a raised target has been used the number of points designated for each hole that has been ‘filled’ with the bowl(s) of each side is totalled.
After completion of the designated number of ends all the points gained by each side are totalled.
An end is completed when each player on either side delivers their bowl in turn until all the bowls have been delivered. The game is won by the side who has the greatest accumulative score after all the ends have been completed. In the event of the final scores being equal after the designated ends have played and where a jack is being used an extra end is played to determine the winners.
In the event of the final scores being equal In the game where one of the target accessories is being used more than one end may be required to determine the winners. The designated number of ends may not be required where a side is so far ahead on the scorecard that the opponents cannot score sufficient points in the remaining ends to win the game.
